After 162 games in the South Australian colours, Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball legend, Steven McInnes has officially called time on his representative playing career. A true pioneer of the sport, Steve has been a driving force for Men’s and Mixed Netball both in South Australia and across the country for more than two decades.
Steve’s impact on the game extends far beyond the court. His passion, leadership and unwavering commitment have helped shape the landscape of Men’s and Mixed Netball in Australia, laying the foundations for the success and growth the sport enjoys today.
Steve’s state journey began in 2003, at just 20 years old and over the span of his incredible career, Steve represented South Australia in an impressive 162 games — a testament to his dedication, resilience and elite performance. These appearances spanned multiple divisions, including 23 and Under, Open Men’s and Open Mixed and both reserves divisions. His consistent presence across all levels of state competition is a true reflection of his versatility and enduring excellence on the court. Steve is known for his strong hand-over defence and smart court play – a reliable teammate who can seamlessly cover positions from GK to WA.
On the international stage, Steve has represented Australia multiple times in both Men’s and Mixed formats. He first earned green and gold honours in 2004 as part of the 23 & Under Men’s team and went on to be selected again in 2005 and 2006. From 2006 to 2009, he starred in the Open Mixed side. Steve’s last time in the national program was in 2018, representing Australia in the 35 & Over division.
Off the court, Steve’s influence has been just as significant. He served as President of SAMMNA for a decade, creating opportunities for young boys to step onto the netball court and dream big. He continues to make his mark as SAMMNA’s Director of Strategy and as Vice President of AMMNA, where he plays a vital role in developing the national pathway and ensuring a strong future for Men’s and Mixed Netball in Australia. Steve has also coached 23 & Under Men's and Open Mixed for South Australia as well as Assistant Coach for the Australian Kelpies team. We thank Steve for everything he has contributed as a player and look forward to seeing the continued impact he’ll make off the court, and in the coaching box, in the years to come.
